The East Hampton Public Library and The Chatham Historical Society will be co-sponsoring a “Cabin Fever History Series” featuring local CT Author’s discussing history during the months of January, February, and March 2019. The programs will be held in the East Hampton Library Community Room on the following dates listed below.
Directions: From the Stop & Shop on Route 66 in East Hampton go south on Main Street for approx. .5 mile. The Public Library is on the left side of the road.

Author Nicholas Bellantoni will present a slide presentation on his new book, The Long Journeys Home: The Repatriations of Henry Opukahaia and Albert Afraid of Hawk at The East Hampton Library.
Bellantoni is an associate adjunct professor in the anthropology department at the University of Connecticut and emeritus Connecticut state archaeologist at the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History. Part of Bellantoni’s responsibilities as state archeologist was to oversee excavations and disinterments. He writes about two extraordinary stories of repatriation in his newly released book, The Long Journeys Home.

John Cilio author of Women’s Work in WWII, tells the epic story of an era when American men went off to war and the majority of women remained behind to care for families and fill the enormous production roles left vacant. Through a large collection of anecdotal stories and a broad collection of vintage photographs he highlights a desperate time in America. The country needed all of the war materials it was capable of producing but American men were being drafted by the millions. Its untested women initially joined the workforce with the mission to help their country and their loved ones in the war. What they accomplished changed America forever.
The life and Practice of Dr Louis Soreff

The Chatham Historical Society and East Hampton Library are co-sponsoring a talk by Dr. Stephen Soreff who will share stories about his father Dr. Louis Soreff who was a general practitioner in East Hampton, CT for 45 years from the 1930s-to 70’s. Stephen Soreff, MD is a nationally recognized author, lecturer, and educator in the field of mental health. With more than 20 years in mental health education. Stephen has a wealth of experience in psychiatric emergency and clinical practice, as well as fifteen years of college and university teaching. Stephen has been the president of Etz Hayim Synagogue and chair of The Forum, an online print newspaper in the New Hampshire. He is the president of Education Initiatives, LLC.

Mary Donohue, the co-author of “A Life of the Land: Connecticut’s Jewish Farmers,” will describe how The Jewish Agricultural Society in New York began an effort in the 1880s to settle some of the new European immigrants on farms in Connecticut. One area the society chose was centered around Colchester, Lebanon, and Montville. The story of these families and how they, worked the farms for generations and developed the resorts of Moodus, CT
Donohue is the Asst. Publisher of Connecticut Explored magazine and president of Grant House Heritage Services, a full-service historic preservation consulting firm.
Antique Appraisal Day
The Chatham Historical Societies Annual Antique Appraisal Day Saturday, March 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the East Hampton Public Library in East Hampton, CT. The Historical Society only provides verbal evaluations in person at this event. If you are looking for an appraiser in your area, we have some suggestions to help you on your search. Look through your local yellow pages under “antiques,” “auctions” or “appraisers.” Inquire with other local antique collectors, or art museums to see if they have any suggestions or recommendations. The goal of the Antique Appraisal Day is to asses what an item is worth, we cannot give specific advice on the buying and selling of objects.
