A Village Built by the River

Known as Chatham since 1767, Middle Haddam grew into one of the most prosperous shipbuilding ports on the Connecticut River. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the homes that lined its streets belonged to the merchants and shipwrights who built that industry, and many of those homes still stand today.

Of every section of East Hampton, Middle Haddam carries the most storied history, and its houses tell that story in wood, brick, and stone. This year's tour is dedicated entirely to them. You can browse examples of these landmarks on our Historic Homes page.
